some chat with K in the car on our way to the soccer match today planted this qn mark in my head.. it just set my brain on overtime... pondering n thinking.. this is the conversation.
K: hey melvyn, do u hv a gf in singapore?
me: no... y? (this is so me.. always counter asking.)
K: no lah.. coz i hv this classmate. he's also singaporean. and he is unattached too.
K: i asked him why he is still unattached. and he say he wants to get a degree, a job le then think of girlfren. but i think that is kinda too late.
me(as usual dumb-struck): oh...?
some car in front suddenly jam braked and K jammed too.. and i was spared from further awkward qns/reactions.. but then after some time,...
K: how come u singaporeans studying here all unattached?
me: erm,.. maybe it's army? after 2 yrs in army.. most of us hv little time with gfs and end up breakup or maybe just no time to find one. or maybe if we had gfs, we wouldn't wanna come aussie study already?
(i should hv just said,
"if we had gfs, coming here would mean that wed almost definitely lose them.. coz they'll find some other guys.."
or
"coz in singapore, the girls not interested in u until u assured of career, car, future and uni is one of the steps to achieving them!"
alrite.. dun humtum me.. female readers... )
K: oic. u noe... i used to play for the state league. then me n my fren,.. we stop playing for a while.. then felt a bit rusty so we joined this team.
me: oh? he must be good.. how come he's not playing now?
K: coz he say he scared he is getting old and might not get attached.
me: then what he do now?
K: he say he wanna pick up girls.
me: eh? how?
K: go church..
me(eyes widened): huh? oh.. ok...
that must be the most ridiculous yet truthful reason for quitting a soccer team i've ever heard.
hmmmm... ok.., back to the topic. have u ever thought abt life? like how it is supposed to be led? how has it gone so far for u? what do u foresee urself in the near n more distant future? does it seem good to u? are u satisfied with how u think it will pan out? is this what u realli want in life? do u think u should do something abt it now if u ain't satisfied?
in short, what do u want from life? hv u got it already? if not, r u on the right track? or do u believe that u should just live ur life(if u still call it one..), and hope it all pans out well...?
is life supposed to be a routine? i feel mine is.. and on pondering on, maybe it always has been. doing the same stuff over n over again.. meeting the same ppl, talking abt the same topics.. hmmm... i haven been letting my hair down.. i haven allowed myself to.. or rather i haven got the right company..
lotsa issues weighing me down.. expectations, responsibilities, ambitions, aspirations... things that dun bother me much when i was younger.. say in poly or something.. seeing my classmates.. i can feel the age difference. in our mentality. our thinking.. it's like looking at a mirror.. seeing the old me and reflecting.. luffing at how slack i was, admiring how carefree i was..
this is why all of us wanna be kids all over again.. don't we?

DVD Update:
2001: A Space Odyssey
It's an old film. the amount of technology stuff demonstrated for a 1968 film is amazingly interesting but it's not your usual movie with the action coming fast and furious. It's an artistic kinda show.. the classical music with little dialogue and all.. and everything seems to happen in slow motion. well, i didn't fancy that.. i totally flopped to find zhou gong last night..
but i watched it again with fast forward etc and this webbie realli tells the story with a much clearer view.. much faster too.. after the url, i understand the film so much more and find it realli well plot.. maybe it's me, but i caught no ball be4 the viewing of the flash on the url. 6.5 out of 10.

was busy trying to reorganize my life back into study mode.. coz easter holidays seemed to hv wrecked my whole life upside-down.. sleeping at 5++am and waking up way past noon everyday.. watching 2-3 movies a day.. neglecting my homework.. bumming around watching dvds and the time just flew by..
dug out my organizer/diary from under the pile of dvds, papers and other rubbish and started planning ahead.. noted all the assignment deadlines while i watched the shanghai noon featurettes and stuff.. it's so amazing the stuff they do in the making of the film.. getting all those toy trains and falsifying the fake mountains n stuff.. way too cool.. i wish i could work in a set like that.. it'd be sooooo..... FUN..
so far i've put on the contact lenses 3 times by myself.. the first time i took an hour to put them on and half an hour to get them off.. the 2nd time, i took 2 amazing-and-wonder-if-it's-a-world-record hours to put them on while using only 5 mins to remove them.. and finally on the morning of my soccer match, i took just 5 mins to put them on and a min to remove them.. heh.. many thanks to all who've adviced me on msn.. but special thanks to this advice(see pic below) from my fren(female of coz..)DVD Update:
- Lucky Number Slevin
I watched this movie with no prior information on what kind of movie to expect.(as usual..) this show is full of twists.. initially i thought i got myself in a horror movie which i am currently craving..(for god knows why..) then as the story moves, i thought it was gonna be a comedy or a love story.. heh,.. i'm the kind of person who'll be guessing the story's next step thru out the show.. though the speech synchronizing was pretty bad, i'd agree that this movie is very well thought out and it has quite an interesting plot to it.. 7 out of ten..
*btw, found that lucy liu has this sensual factor abt her.. hey.. she's not drop dead pretty.. but there is something abt her.. hmmm.... does she remind u of a snake? haha.. her eyes perhaps..

Tribute to my idol for a long time... here's a man whose honest humility and 110% effort shines thru in every game he plays.. an exemplery act to all aspiring youngsters which is probably extinct in this time and day.. he's a family man to a D.. he doesn't go to pubs, drink his head and liver away and after that wake up naked with a chick he barely knew..
Former England captain and retiring Newcastle United captain/player/assistant manager, he leads the men out to fight with all his effort in every game. some say the best way to lead is to show the men how to do it. Respect is from all whom is fortunate enuff to have gotten that warm reassuring pat on the back from him.
it has been 10-12 years that i've been supporting him.. following him through his career from blackburn to newcastle.. so much so that i'm now stuck on with newcastle.. i hv to admit initially i was supporting newcastle becoz of him.. but now.. it's in my blood..

Today was my big day. my league debut. first time wearing contact lenses to play soccer. hmmm... my fringe long n getting in the way of my eyes... the wind blowing into my dry lens.. we took a team photo..it was a game against last year's champs.. we knew it was gonna be hard.. the captain asked me whether i wanna take the corner kicks.. i told him i wasn't so good.. so they assigned another..
i was reluctant to take a corner coz i felt my kicks ain't realli good.. preferred to be just outside the box taking long shots. but when kim(the assigned corner kick taker) shouted, "MELVYN! GO TAKE IT.." i just complied and swung a deep corner in.. i swung it high and deep and it curled it into goal as the goalie was deceived by the flight of my kick when he came out to gather and it curled into goal.
whooooooooooooooo hooooooooooooooooo.... what a wonderful feeling...
DVD Update:
1) Aeon Flux
The dvd i dl-ed was of such poor quality in terms of both sound and picture that i was quite turned off already right from the beginning. the thing with this kind of high tech futuristic films to me is that their sound effects need to be flawlessly perfect. else the draw won't be there.. and outrageously, the plot wasn't even half as good.. oh man.. these 'ultraviolet' kinda flops shouldn't be rolled out into the cinemas.. i feel cheated for my downloading time wasted.. imagine ppl paying 8 bucks for this?! oh man.. 5 marks to charlize theron for doing that split.. heh..
2) Shanghai Noon
My dinnertime movie today.. actually grew up kinda fond of these comedic pairups kinda show.. i remember last time this bald guy i always call "guang tou lao". whenever their shows are on at night past my 10pm bedtime curfew, i would ask mum to let me watch.. heh.. this one is nice too.. 7.5 outta 10.

What a uneventful day i had.. eat.. procrastinate.. sleep.. movie.. procrastinate.. eat.. bath.. movie.. oh man.. now back to procrastinating..
i woke up at 12 noon. (watching late night movies mah..) brushing up and then brekkie. did some usual surfing, and before i realli noe it, it was 2pm. u see.. last night i had planned my itinery for the day with the intention of getting some work done.. and 2pm was supposed to be the time i start on my brochure design. 2-6 it says..
but i had to decide to practice putting on contact lenses. and it took me a freaking 2 hours to get them both on with some msn help in between.. then i tried to get some work done.. application started. i stare at it, it stared back at me.. hey u noe me? nahz.. the previous layout had been chopped up pretty much by my lecturer.. and i just have no idea how to begin.. as i am faced by the problem at hand, my laptop had to keep bothering me with not enuff memory notice.. i felt realli lazy.. and i just got so fed up i close all the photoshop and illustrator and what nots and caught another movie..
and napped a little apparently.. the rain and cool/cold weather was great for snugging under my thin-but-enuff-for-me blanket watching a movie.. woke up and did more procrastinating with the illustrator shit before deciding to buy dinner.. apparently it had rained pretty heavily/recently.. the streets were pretty wet. it hadn't dried up..
dinner then bath.. then procrastinated again.. before deciding to blog first.. and here i am.. abt to go back to work.. oh man.. i realli need to kick my own ass..
DVD Update:
1) Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
I've long heard of Indiana Jones but my memory is so bad i dun remember whether i've seen it before.. this is a very good movie and anyone who loves stories like Crocodile Dundee or Da Vinci Code will surely like it.. (as i watch this film, it reminded me of the enjoyment i had while reading Da Vinci Code. only it is much shorter in length. can't wait to get a download on that! kekeke..) Mixes action, adventure and mystery all into one.. one thing i start noticing after i started on my graduate programme is the titles.. the director, the actor names, the producer etc.. and for this movie i saw quite a lot of names i heard of before.. and it seems to me they were small farts when this film was made.. like george lucas, he ain't the director man.. prolly still learning his trade.. 8 outta 10!
2) Huo Yuan Jia (Fearless)
Another film i have been putting off since .... dunno when.. not a big fan of kungfu shows. but.. this movie does hv a good plot. i like films with emotional plot. and this one does it for me.. Although in a way, this film acts as a tribute to Huo Yuan Jia(a martial arts master i've never heard of before this film), it doesn't push the msg straight into your face. The rejuvenation of Jet Li in the movie had such a big impact on me, i could picture myself shouting his name in the scene right there and then.. in sport and competition, winning in style and at the same time fairness has always been fundamental in my thinking.. and the fight between Jet and the big American Hercules more than exemplify that.. i hv to admit my eyes had some extra tears welling up then.. Respect. Winning in style and fairness and earning the respect and graciousness of the losing opponent. what a feeling.. what a man.. 8 punches into the air!

Solitaire
noun, a gem (usually a diamond) in a setting by itself.
i have a confession to make.. i like to play solitaire. haha.. i noe it's such a simple game which most of the time gets on the nerves of everyone coz it's not easy to complete one game. but i am usually stuck on it for quite some time once i start a game.. either refusing to give up without even winning a single game or winning a couple of games and wanting to hold on to my hard earned points.

DVD Update:
Cry Wolf
Cry Wolf is in a way predictable yet it also gave our mind much room for suspense and imagination.. briefly, it's abt a bunch of high school seniors who started this hoax rumour abt a murder and it all started coming alive into reality.. i like it.. i dun wanna spoil it for u so i shan't reveal much.. let's just say.. it all turned out not exactly the way i predicted but pretty much in that direction.. as my physics teacher used to say, expect the unexpected.. watch it.. 7.5 out of 10.
Seven Swords
This is a movie i've been putting off watching since the day i met ben. my roomie. i am nv a fan of chinese fighting movies.. the several which i watched haven done much to impress me either.. the serial are usually better.. maybe i dunno how to appreciate the art direction & stuff like choreography in these kung fu movies.. found it pretty long and draggy but some nice scenery on show.. 6 outta 10..
Today i got my contacts on in about 30-45 mins. dammit.. from standing to leaning to sitting position.. i got my left lens in 15 minutes but i swear the right lens is so much more stubborn.. finally got it in at the expense of my tears.. when i finally put in my right lens, it stung me badly but i was determined to keep it in.. and a drop of tear flowed out..
but.. it was in n i dun care anymore.. i went out for the day settling some library stuff and bought dinner.. watch dvd during dinner n after that wanted to bath.. then there i was feeling dumb asking such a qn as i look back on it..

DvD Update:
1) UltraViolet
The title drew me to downloading the movie..(i find i'm kinda of a sucker for one word titles..) but it kinda disappointed me badly. Action chick with hot bod and nothing else.. i fell asleep twice during the movie. an action movie that failed to enthrall me at all.. fake fighting is boring to me.. Violet in the show is just too superhuman.. one man show?? no tricks nor twist to the plot at all.. 3 points for the hot bod. kekeke.. ;)
2) Fantastic Planet
This is a dvd i borrowed from the library off a fren's recommendation. it's a full length animated feature. the pictures on the dvd plus the title didn't attract me one bit. i was putting off watching it again and again till i hv simply no more dvds to watch. the music and pictures still didn't attract me but the story plot was interesting.
Something imaginary.. abt some alien planet and humans being known as Oms and reared as pets.. i kinda like it eventually. the ideas are good. abt the environment. the strange creatures which u could tell is a combination of 2 or more actual living animals found today. It's a Grand Prix Winner Cannes Film Festival afterall.. 7 outta 10.

Made a little trip to the optometrician today.. did a check up on my eyes.. still roughly the same as my last check up.. 52 bucks for the check up! lucky i covered under medibank.. can be claimed back.. got a complimentary pair of contact lens to try out for a week or so to orientate and try out...
the optometrician put it on for me and it seemed easy enuff.. but he told me that i hv to learn how to remove it there n then before i could leave.. i tried a couple of times unsuccessfully but managed to "taiko"-ly removed it on my 4th attempt!i didn't even noe i was holding it. damn.. my insensitive fat fingers.
then he told me to try putting it in.. holding a mirror in front of me. i tried a couple of times n failed miserably.. on one occasion, folding the poor lens into half like what a fold-over waffle wrap will look like. the optometrician said he wasn't too concerned abt me not noeing how to put it on coz he says it comes with experience.. so he put it on for me and i left..
so into my nike cap, my spectacles went.. seeking refuge from this make-shift spectacle cover. and i went shopping.. wanting to accustom myself to the lens.. it felt funny now that i wasn't at the optometrician's. the focusing and clarity of things made me uncomfortable. kinda giddy and i felt i was taking in too much visual information for my head could take.. and thus, i start to get a little giddyish and headache.
my right eye went a lil' watery and i rubbed it. then suddenly, i see things even less clearly. blur is the word. oh my god.. dun tell me i dropped my lens.. i stop in my tracks n looked at the floor.. then i sat down on a bench nearby and tried to "pirate-eye" it into my sights.. but to no avail.. then i thought.. maybe it is still in my eye.. just outta place or something..
i felt my eye thru the eye lids and found something beneath.. when i dug it out, there it was again! In its waffle wrap position. DAMN.. i hurriedly pirate-eyed my way to a toilet and got stuck in there for like 20 minutes trying to put it back in but my lashes, which i think are kinda long, kept on waffle-wrapping it.
i gave up trying to put it on and tried to take off my left lens instead. another ten minutes stuck in the toilet facing the mirror.. finally i gave up completely. totally defeated, i walked home as pirately as Jack Sparrow. one lens in solution container, one lens in left eye and spectacles is temporary spectacle cover.
then somehow i managed to remove it at home in half the time and i went online pulliing the buddha's leg seeking tips and tricks from my frens.. ahhh... these tips might come in handy tomolo when i try them on again.but now, it's time for another dvd.. lens container banished into my bedside drawer.. haaa.. my trusty spects' better anyway.. as i said be4, i always prefer to wear spects coz i thought i look nicer with spects.. heh..
some friends told me about the color lens.. my... i wonder if a green one will cost the same.. hmmm.. just a thought.. just a thought..

DVD Updates:
1) Lord Of War (watched during dinner ytd)
An interesting movie trying to put across some kind of political message about manufacturing firearms etc.. very existentialistic feeling to it.. all in all, it opened my eyes to a different point of view. a view from an arms dealer.. his wishes, his hopes, his skills, his expertise.. he's not exactly wrong.. but sometimes, we hv to be able to live up to our conscience allow.. sad but true kinda feel.. 6.5 outta scale of 10.2) V For Vendetta (0330h - 0530h approximately)
About this freedom fighter, V, exacting his revenge and also somewhat a political msg put across about the hideous ways of a totalistic govt hiding their mistakes and blaming it on others.. Have you ever heard the government apologized for a grave mistake? no.. somehow they can't admit their mistakes.. this reminds me of army. no matter what, the commanders just cannot admit they're wrong else they'll lose respect from the men. again.. sad but true.. 6 outta 10. (1 pt deducted for shaving Natalie Portman botak! OUTRAGEOUS!)
3) Meet Joe Black (watched during dinner tonite)
Another film which opens my eyes to a new perspective. This time from the devil's point of view.. i see an analogy through this film.. that sometimes we are like brad pitt in the film.. we get so engrossed in our work that we neglect the true joys in living.. so maybe we could take a holiday(like him) slurp some peanut butter spoons and heed the advice of Bill Parrish(Anthony Hopkins).. i like it. 8.5 !!
"Love is passion, obsession, someone you can't live without. If you don't start with that, what are you going to end up with? Fall head over heels. I say find someone you can love like crazy and who'll love you the same way back. And how do you find him? Forget your head and listen to your heart. I'm not hearing any heart. Run the risk, if you get hurt, you'll come back. Because, the truth is there is no sense living your life without this. *Updated: Roomie being tortured by me!i am not happy. dammit roomie.. it's happened again.. i am in my room, i wake up wanting to have dinner.. roomie said he didn't cook my share.. oh so wonderful.. not that i woke up hoping he had cooked mine but at least i woke up with the hope of cooking my dinner. not to be faced with more utensils in the sink!!!
I AM MAD. I DON'T CARE.. EITHER I LIVE ALONE NEXT SEMESTER OR I LIVE WITH SOMEONE ELSE..
is it just ME? am i being too difficult? is it that difficult to everyday fold your blanket, make ur bed after u wake up, keep the room neat and not leave jackets n jeans on sofas, wash utensils properly n not scratch them out of convenience and taking the easy way out, not to mention not to leave overnight dishes every other day, quit being stingy as to use that teeny weeny camping style spoon and fork to have ur meals?
And oso stop marinating food like they are dirty using a plastic rice pot laddle to marinate the just-out-of-freezer meat. and remember to marinate both sides instead of just one side. and and and... i'd still rather u marinate both sides of it AFTER u've defroze the meat. oh yes.. the rice cooker cover needs to be washed after use too..
i guess when u already consider urself lazy, u can't stand seeing someone lazier.. i'm very sorry but i have to say this.. it seems to me that he is utterly over-spoilt and over pampered at home. and the 2 and a half years he served in army hasn't done much to change him for the better. (i cannot imagine him being any worse.. OMG!) Everyday 8-5 in army, book out everyday go home got maid/mum to cook for him, wash for him, make his bed for him after he wake up. after army still scared dirty until marinate meat need to use a rice pot laddle. MAN! he is an eye sore..
aHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.... HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WORK WHEN I AM SO DAMN PISSED??!?!

DVD Updates:
hmmmm... Fight Club was a very interesting watch coz i had to double check to know i was indeed watching fight club about 15 mins into the show.. u noe.. i often form impressions of movies by their titles.. i dunno whether that's right, but i just do it. and fight club gave me the impression of dirty alleys, sweat, brute, muscles etc.. i didn't like that. but the start progressed from nothing i had expected and i was totally intrigued trying to predict ahead of the film that all those stuff i disliked above just didn't turn me off.. i like their sound effects.. they caught my attention.
First impressions from the title.. i straight away brand it as a high school potentially cheesy comedy but always with a happy ending.. then i read up more on the internet that it was actually adapted from Shakespeare's The Taming of The Shrewd. awww... that title made sense.. but i am always in for romantic happy endings. And Hey! Hollywood sure know how to make such a beautiful girl look sulky and turn off.. juz look at the difference between this two pictures.. the one on the left just turned me off.. right one's on the contrary.. as the movie develops Julia Stiles sure look prettier and prettier.. Aww.. and i just love to see her dance.. whoo.. blown away...
I went for soccer in the afternoon.. i like to experience new things.. the skies gave me the chance today.. it rained.. i was yawning before the game.. and i saw smoke! it was that cold.. haa.. i dunno what u'll call that exactly but u get the idea.. it was raining when our match began and it was freezing cold. i ran for like 10 to 15 minutes and i still wasn't getting any warmer.. so it took quite a while for me to get to running shape. we didn't play very well against the opposition, we lost.. dun wanna get into the details of the friction between some team-mates.. but i am so caught in between.
i feel i've been rather choosy in terms of part time job.. i dun want chinese restaurants coz i wanna mix around with some locals/aussies.. i want a cafe preferably coz a small part of me wants to open a cafe some time after my career is on track and i thought some prior experience of working in one might help..
i've always hv this vision of reading papers or just lazing my day at a cafe with some friends in a place i can call my own.. hmmm.. maybe it's not quite possible in singapore.. not so impossible here in australia though.. but then.. living here for good is so fast-tracked.. haven got to that yet but it's a thought, u noe.. it's a thought.. *dumps it in a corner at the back of my head*
that's all for now.. FOLKS.. ;)

Been a bummer again today.. no work output again.. it's Good Friday and i didn't realize coz i've started my holiday since Wed class ended.. i went out wanting to buy some disposable contact lenses and with 3 copies of printed resumes lookin for a job only to find almost everywhere closed. To add to my misery, it was drizzling the whole day! i didn't even know coz my window doesn't show me much scenery.. if i had known, i wouldn't hv come out..
but rather surprisingly,.. i love the cool cool weather during rain.. walking under the gloomy skies in the streets. looking at people. embracing the cold.. ahh... it turned out to be a refreshing stroll for me.. afterall being stuck at home the whole day is so NO-LIFE..
alrite.. after this post, i will aim to complete my media cultures assignment.

hmmm... u must be thinking that i must realli happy and all.. but.. i'm kinda hving a dilemma right now.. i got loads of work. i dun feel like starting.. i might hv to do some research during my holidays too but so far, all i've done is watch dvd and play football manager. argh.. when i do work, i feel stress.. when i play i dun feel totally carefree.. coz there is work undone. damn..
am i old or something? how come some of my classmates haven done any work yet is able to just play their time away so carefreely n not feel worried? they remind me of my days in poly.. always do things last minute. how come i find it so hard to be slack and not feel guilty now?
maybe now i noe the reason why aikie is so hardworking in poly.. time. age. money. conscience. responsibility. maturity? i dunno.. arrggghhhh...!!!!!!!!!!!!!
